A first for Orlando

On October 28, Croxel took part in the first Zephyr meetup in Orlando, which we hope is the first of many. It was a great evening: a room full of engineers, from developers just getting started with Zephyr to teams already shipping products on it, along with folks from Future Electronics, NXP and Nordic.

The best part was the conversation. People asked questions throughout the evening and stayed afterward to compare notes, which is exactly what a local community needs to grow.

The talk

Our Lead Firmware Engineer, Luis Ubieda, gave the evening’s technical talk, Achieving Low-Power with Power-Management. It tackled a question we hear a lot: if Zephyr has a reputation for power efficiency, why doesn’t it behave that way out of the box, and what do you do about it?

To answer that question, Luis covered four strategies:

  • System power management: what the CPU does when it has nothing to do
  • Device runtime power management: keeping peripherals asleep until they’re needed
  • Device power domains: grouping peripherals so they can be powered down together
  • Continued measurements: making sure power stays optimized with every release

The takeaway: low power in Zephyr is very achievable, but it has to be configured on purpose.

Thank you

A big thank you to Melissa McCarthy and the Future Electronics team, and to our friends at NXP, for organizing the meetup and bringing the Space Coast embedded community together. And thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a good evening. We hope to see you at the next one.
